ANNUAL MEETING
MONDAY, APRIL 7th
The annual meeting of delegates of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union was bold at 8 p.in. Presut:—Mr E. W. Median (in the chair), Alessrs F. McGregor (life lion, member), S. Moore and J. AR'Cleary (Kiwi Club), J. Cooper (Rimu), J. Stafford (Arahura), A. Ciitbnsb (Moss and Referees’ Association delgate), E. W. Hconan and A. Lawn (Rivals), J. .1. Breeze and R. McDonald (Excelsior), J. Mora (District Schools). The Rival Club Was admitted to membership. ANNUAL REPORT.
The Sub-Union once again enjoyed a splendid season, both from a financial point of view as well as a distinct success from the players’ view. The senior competition again proved a big draw and the local team, Excelsiors, again proved victorious, the team well deserving their success. The Junior competition brought forth spirited competition, and the ultimate winners proved to he the Ross team and they now hold tlie Newman Cup and the McGregor Banner, a country team who worked hard and wellmerited their win.
Tiic Jrd-gradc Competition was not the success the Sub-Union expected but ibis is in a measure*duc to the ago limit which has to be enforced especially on account of the tender years of the members of the School team. The State School team however proved the winners and they are to lie congratulated on their fine displays given, they therefore bold the Maud I Cup for the season. The Sub Union were very fortunate in having two thorough enthusiasts at the school in the Rector, ~ir Partridge, and the team’s coach. Mr Williamson. Both these gentlemen deserve the Sub-Unions’ best thanks as they were a tower of strength to the Rugby code in 'West-land. While on School matters the Sub-Union also'desires to thank Mr Pitt for his interest in. the Rols scholars, Mr Maloney for his interest in the Arahura school and to other teachers who instructed their scholars in the Rugby code. The Sub-Union also assisted practically ail the district schools hv the donation of footballs and these wore heartily appreciated.
In the matter of School football the Sub-Union desires to tender its sincere thanks to Father McKay for his ready a. sistance to the scholars of the Convent schools in our district. Helms effected a .marked improvement ill the standard of the play, his ready assistance as a referee is heartily appreciate cc. by the Rugby Union. The Knockout Junior competition was also won by Ross Club and they hold the Breeze Shield for the season. From a financial position the season was. a distinct success, the Union finishing up with a credit balance. Although not a big one it does reflect credit on the management of the fixtures and the standard of play. During the season, the Union extended financial assistance to the Earthquake Relied Fund fev-the- amoiHvfc^off to the State School £5 Referees’ Assn. £3 6s 6d, players’ appeal for injured £27 13s and a further appeal of £2 2s. When this total amount of just over £69 has been paid out of Union receipts to the;' various causes and the Union has run ont.-.-.Jvit]k. a,.cr edit .balance, it justly proves" that the past season has been a distinct success from every.point of view. ~,<v, <v , . The Sub-Union wcrd4/alsk> 'successful in winning hack thbU-murh coveted Rittmaii Shield, and also successfully defending it against successive challengers. The Inangahiia Sub-Union !', nvarded in a challenge ,ior this Shield hut unfortunately the season . Was too far advanced for the game to be contested. The se.ven-a-asiclo tournament on June 3rd. was Mi'e/usual' distinct success and the players-thoroughly enjoyed the games. There.was spirited competition for the various Imphi'es and every grade was keenly contested. The Shrimp and Bantam 'teams from all over the district provided- keenly contested games, and Convent and State teams were the respective winners. June 3rd. Tia-s'blow heGmie a national holiday in Westland. and is a- red lelter day in Rugby football circles in our district. ;
The Westland Senior It team were successful iut winning both - matches agaiiist the ; Northern division, also {lie .Junior reps were highly successful, winning both their matches--' against the Northern. Peps. . «. The players are to he congratulated on the very fine manner in which all the matches were eon tested, the. committee having ho occasion to; call any special meeting to deal with offending players.

The caretaker, Mr Herring, carried out his duties’ in a vqry thorough manner and kept the Union’s gear in firstclass order: also the gate -inspector, Mr \Y. Gaylor, whose duties were also carried out in a very’thorough manner, and the Union desires to tender both those members their very host‘thanks. The official time-keeper, Mr A- W. Varrall, also, carried out his duties effectively, and llie Union hopes to he favoured with the ready assistance of

Keller for his kindness in placing his meeting room at the Union’s disposal and also to the Clubs in our district. The press has always given of its best to the Rugby gaimo and the Union and players are grateful, for without the press it is practically impossible to accomplish anything. The Union swelled the Borough coffers to the extent of £l7 and it is to be hoped that the Uoiimii will endeavour to improve the playing fields, the No 1 field especially needfj attention.
The .Ross Club bold their .annual 7asidc tourney and the Union rendered all assistant 1 possible. The weather was not on its best behaviour, but the tourney, nevcrhelcss was a- success. Iho Cobden team proved victorious.

It was resolved by 6/Votes to 4 that the age limit of third grade players he 18 years on April Ist, 1930. It was recommended that third grade players combine as follows: One team in town, Arahura and Rimu combine, and State School supply third team. T. Growcott was reclassified as a junior.
It was resolved that four school boys lie exempt from the age limit provided two play in each team.
Permission-.wills granted, the Excelsiors to play United on Cass Square on Saturday.
