ARAHURA SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the school last night. All members were present, except Mr Yv. W. Dove, ifor whom an apology was tendered. The Head teacher’s report shows the roll 51, with an average attendance for the four weekly period of 44.99.

A load of firewood was left over from lbst year. Minor repairs necessary around the school and cottage were pointed out. The temporary assistant (Miss Havill) had finished her duties on Friday, and during her term put in some excellent work. The permanent assistant, Miss McMahon, started this morning.*. The report was received from tlie Chairman, promising to see that the school was not short of wood on account of the local- mill closng. The Chairman reported that since the last ordinary meeting a communication had been received from the Canterbury Board, which made it quite plain that the Board still had the idea that opinion was still divided in this district ns to consolidation with Hokitika, and on that account they were holding over the appointment of a permanent Head teacher for the school untill it was definitely settled. On receipt of this the secretary and the chairman, through the courtesy of Mr A. Bradley, were enabled to wait on the parent or guardian of every child on the school roll, with the result that the parents of forty nine out of the fifty-one on the roll expressed their intention of opposing any interference with this school. Tt was resolved immediately to forward this petition to the Board and ask them no longer to delay the appointment of a permanent Headmaster.

The present cominttee resolved to stand again for election on 28th having for their slogan—“ Hands off our School.”
