HUTT ON MT. EGMONT

ERECTION COMPLETED

HAWERA, April 7

The culmination of a month’s sustained effort was reached during the week-end when the erection of a hut on Fanthcm’s Peak, Tit. Kgmont, was completed. Situated at an altitude of 0433 feet, the hut will provide a* lofty rendezvous for skiing and general alpniC’ recreation. It has accommodation* with sleeping quarters . for ten persons. In altiture, this 1 lit is second only to the Haast hut, Tit. Cook.

The portage of the whole of the materials from Dawson’s Falls, 3100 feet, to the site of the hut was arranged voluntarily by the members of the Kgmont Alpine Club, at whose suggestion the South Committee of the Egmont Park Board arranged for the erection. The portage has occupied the Club members in their spare time- since November.

During the interview to-day, Tlr L. 0. Hooker, the Club President, and also tlie Secretary of the Park' Beard Committee, said the but shoo id add greatly to the attraction of the Egmont resorts. The cost had been approximately £2OO but had it been necessary to pay for portage, the outlay would have been in the vicinity of £6OO.
