FATHER’S APPEAL
H for' Leniency-for son

AUCKLAND, April 7
From- the back of the Court this morning a father’s voice was raised in an appeal for leniency for his son charged with forgery of a cheque. Justice Ostler granted the young man probation for 18 months and suppressed his name. The prisoner had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court, and in reply to the usual question whether he had anything to say why sentence should not Ire passed, the youth replied, “No, sir.”
“I would like to say something, if I may,” came a voice from the back. ‘‘l am bis father.” “Certainly you may,” replied the judge.
The father then told the judge his son was not normal, and ggve details of treatment for nerve trouble. He had been sent to a farm at Ohura, and on being paid by cheque, thought he could alter i,t. The father said lie realised he had made a mistake in sending the hoy away from home, but be had believed it would strengthen him.
