WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE
A special meeting of. the .Executive of the League was held at the Coun-; j ty On ambers at 7.80 o’clock last even- ' ing. Present: Messrs J. J. Mclntosh. (Vice-President), Tv W, Duff, W. Wilson, T. The Chairman said the meeting had. been 'called in connection with the proposed good • will tour of the Canterbury Progress League. A trip was being organised, and in view of several ’ district- matters-;regarding which; tnc influential support of the League would be helpful, t-would be well to-co-opera te as far as-Jpbssible with visit, and induce the - party to go into yf South Westland, wheremiatters of publib interest also required support. Mr Evans explained that it was thought by co-operation with the tour, the request for tne extension of the. railway south could ! be advanced considerably. It might-be possible to secure the help off tbe .yarious .branches of the Farmers’ Union in the south, and a joint meeting be held at Harihari when eii route , south. There the visitors could be entertained at the public hall,' and the requirements of'the district in regard to the railway and other matters could* bo brought forward. There was also the matter of a motor road from Canterbury to Westland which it was necessary at this juncture to keep in the forefront, including a permanent deviation at theWiaimakariri crossing, also the ques-\V tion of back freights- for trading with; - the farmers of Canterbury.
Mr Bruce supported-the proposal to receive and entertain-the visitors, and place the matters referred to before., them. It was essential ' the party, should visit South ■ Westland in regard to the railway possibilities, and while in the southern district other -matters: of local interest could be -brought before them. Messrs Wilson and-Duff supported action to secure the visit south. Mr Evans moved that pleasure be expressed at the proposed visit, ana the -ceiigue thanked- for *the matter; and that fit be suggested the tour definitely include a visit to South Westland to noie the requirements of tne locality to assist- its more rapid advancement. The Chairman seconded the motion which iwas,scarried.
It was resolved to. ask the local hdd-.. ies to co-operate, und appoint dele-li-gates to a joint reception committee / to organise for the.-.entertainment of the visitors on the evening of arrival,, and that the at Hapi- ; ha-ri be communicated with relative.to organising the.stop, when local affairs could be brought to" , fiotice ’ and tIW visitors entertained.
It was stated the party would fee a considerable one, and; it was. hoped the southern tour would not be skimped for time, and that the visit would include Waihp and Weheka. The meeting concluded at 8 o’clock.
