ANOTHER GERMAN NOVEL
“Schlump: The Story of an Unknown Soldier ” (Martin Seeker, per Robertston and Mullens), translated from the German by Maurice Samuel, is the singularly attractive story of a young German soldier who, enlisting when not yet twenty, when the war broke out, sees service, at first in charge of a German Commissariat and Headquarters department in an occupation camp near Mons, and is thence transferred to the trenches, where his experiences recall those of the hero of Remarque’s “ All Quiet on the Western Front.” Schlump’s experiences at Occupation Headquarters and in the trenches are much less awful than those depicted by Remarque, but they give an inside view of the many hoirors and' miseries of the German soldier, though scarcely comparable to those of the earlier book.
