Taranaki Oil report:—Gisborne No. 2 well is .experiencing -difficulty in bolding up the caving-m of shale between 3800 ft. and 3895 ft., and is now making a further effort with somewhat modified methods. GISBORNE’S DRY MONTH. GISBORNE, April I. Last month was the driest March in 53 years, the reputation being 23 points of rain in three days. There were 25 consecutive rainless days. N.Z. LOANS. WELLINGTON, April 1. New Zealand’s undertaking to keep of! the London loan market expired yesterday. The Dominion is now free to float loans there once more. The Finance Act last session authorised further borrowing up to millions for public works, education and forestry. There are unexhausted authorities for other loans up to twentyseven millions. FLAX CUTTER’S DEATH. FONTON, April K Albert Acourt, single, a flax cutter for Whitaunui Ltd while engaged in a swamp yesterday met with a serious and subsequently fatal accident. The flax hook slipped from his hand and the blade struck the back of his neck, inflicting a wound three inches deep, cutting through the main vessels. He was attended to by the local doctor and conveyed to the Palmerston North Hospital where he succumbed at an early hour this morning.
CHILD SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES. HAWERA, April- 1. Bruce AfcNae, 4 years, son of Air and Airs H. A. K. AlcNae, of Opunake, succumbed in the hospital last night to injuries received about 5 o’clock when he wa-s struck by a car on the road near Opunake. The child was walking with his brother near the railway crossing, and suddenly decided to cross the road and apparently did not notice the approach of tl\e car driven by It. AI. Julian. LABOUR LEADER’S ADDRESS.' WESTPORT, April 1. In continuation of his Buffer electorate effort in connection with his Party’s national campaign, Air H. E Holland. Leader of the Labour Party, addressed a monthly stop-work meeting of the Westport Waterside AVorkers Union this morning. 1 here was a very large attendance of members and a resolution was unanimously carried pledging a contribution of five shillings per member to tho Party’s fund.
Similar resolutions were carried fit week-end meetings of Westpo-rt Main and Stockton Aliners Unions addressed by Air Holland.
BROADCASTING FAVOURED. BLENHEIM, April 1, Marlborough Rugby Union by seven votes to six expressed itself in favour of broadcasting the British football matches. THEFT CHARGE. TE KUITI, April 1. Victor Daniel Wisnesky (Secretary of the Waitomo Power Board) appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to answer a charge of stealing the sum of £l3 11s, the property of the Board. The police in asking for a remand, said there were other charges pending, involving not less than £ISOO. Accused was remanded, bail being fixed at self in £SOO, and two sureties of £250 each. LAND ACQUIRED. HASTINGS, April 1. Government have acquired 138 acres in the suburbs for closer settlement, to cut up from 12 to 25 acres, providing for the occupation by eight settlers.
