Parties of deer stalkers are now out in the Koiterangi district traversing the hack ranges. They proceeded to Hokitika Gorge, and after following up the Whitcombe river, diverted by Frew’s Creek (a tributary! and from there made towards the Mathias Pass in the region of which it is hoped to secure some good trophies.

The death of Mr F. W. Broughton, on a steamer while eu route to England, announced in our telegrams today, removes a former well known resident of Hokitika of the early nineties, when he was a clerk in the District Land Registrar’s Office at Hokitika for a number of years. He was at that time a well known member of the Hokitika Football Club 1 , plaiting v'iug three-quarter. Deceased married a daughter of the late Mr H. L. Robinson, of Hokitika. Only a few weeks ago deceased retired on superannuation from the office of the District Land Registrar at Christchurch, where he had lived since leaving Hokitika.
Thu planet Mercury was in superior conjunction with the sun on April Ist and will not be visible in the western sky for some days; it twill set on April 22nd at 5.50 p.m., when its apparent magnitude will be—o. 3; Venus will set on April Ist at 6.22 p.m. and on April I.sth at 6.6 p.m. Mars rose on April 1 at 3.48 a.m. and rises on April 15 at 3.47 a.m; Jupiter sets on these dates H 8.33 p.m. and 7.49 p.m. respectively: and Saturn rises at 10.43 p.m. and 9.50 p.m. respectively. There will be a partial eclipse of the moon, partially visible in New Zealand on April 13th. The moon will enter the penumbra at 3.12 p.m. and the umbra at 4.51 p.m. : the middle of the eclipse will be readied at 5.28 p.m., when about one-ninth of the moon’s surface will bo obscured: the moon will leave the umbra at 6.6 p.m. and the penumbra at 7.44 p.m. There will bo a central oclinso of the sun on April 20th, hut the phenomenon will not be visible iu New Zealand. Tbe eclipse will ho total for about 3S minutes at the middle of its duration; for the rest of its duration it will be annular.
