CYCLE CRASH. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, March ‘2B. A head-on collision between two motor-cycles carrying pillion riders took place on the Great South Road between Penrose and Otahuhu tonight, and resulted in serious injuries to four persons, as follows: Allan Wilkin—Compound fracture of the hip and fractured skull. Herbert Crewther—Fractured leg and head injuries, probably a fractured skull.
Leonard Aukett—Slight concussion. Annie Campbell—Concussion and injuries to the face.
The accident was not seen by , anyone, but the tremendous crash attracted a passer-by who found the woman grooming a.nd the riders and machines in a heap at the side of the road. All except the girl were unconscious.
All four were admitted to the Auckland Public Hospital, the condition of Wilkin and Crewther was reported at a late hour to be very serious.
MOTOR SMASH. DUNEDIN, March 28. A car owned and driven by Mr W. T. Henaghan, a Dunedin dentist, who with two other local residents, Messrs W. Foster and W Lloyd, was returning from a bowling trip through Central Otago to-day, struck a telegraph pole near Rae’s Junction, and plunged over a 80 foot bank, turning over three times. Mr Henaghan - was badly bruised, and received considerable shock, but his companions escaped .with a shaking and minor bruising. Loose metal at the scene of the accident. is though to have the trouble.
CITY UNEMPLOYED. DUNEDIN, March 27. Over 600 men have been enrolled on the Trad-ess’ Hall unemloyment register. The secretary lias replied to the Minister of Public Works, expressing resentment at his wire, casting doubts on the authenticity of the figures. The Minister of Railways was invited this morning to examine the register, but preferred waiting to return to Wellington before acting. The Hon. W. B. Taverner also informed the Unemployment Committee that the men put off 'from forestry works did not belong to the unemployed. ' yi CHRISTCHURCH, March 27.
Mr G. T. Thurston (secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Engineering and Allied Trades Unions) reports that many men in the engineering and motor trades in Christchurch are out of work.
“Unemployment -is more prevalent now than it has been for a good while,” Mr Thurston states. MISSING MAN FOUND DYING. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 28. Missing from his home since Thursday morning, a commercial traveller. Harold Wedgewood Witham, married, 1 aged 34, was found near a cliff at the sea for ut to-day, and taken to the hospital, where he died this evening.' Witham had been in ill-health and had been taking treatment. SUSPECTED OF THEFT. NELSON, March 28. Wilter Hinkins. Albert Stanley and Alec Bertram Stroud, members of the crew of the overseas steamer Otaki. were arrested in connection with the theft of goods valued at £IOO from Haßenstein Bros.’ shop They were formally charged with the ■offence to-day and remanded Till Monday. FRACTURED SKULL. AUCKLAND, March 27. While engaged on cleaning the un-der-carriage of a motor-car at Parnell this' morning, Mansell Hill, aged seventeen years, a motor mechanic, of 132, Dominion Road, had his skull fractured when a jack slipped, resulting in the car falling on his head. He was sent to the hospital in a serious condition. ALTITUDE RECORDS. AUCKLAND, March 27. A record altitude for aviation in Auckland was established by Mr T. Phi I cox", of Epsom, at Mangere, yesterday, when ho ascended to 13.000 feet. Mr Philcox, who was trained as a pilot by the Auckland Aero Club, was dying ninety minutes. The conditions were very favourable. The New Zealand record altitude is 19,000 feet established recently in Blenheim.
