SCHOOLMASTER'S SUDDEN DEATH. (By Telegraph—Press Association) INVER,CARuILL, Aiarch 23. The death occurred suddenly this morning of Air Archibald Ballantyne, head master of the Clifton School. Air Ballantyne bad conducted school in the morning as usual, but was found dead after luncheon by one of liis assistants. Death was apparently due to heart failure. DRUNKEN DRIVER. AUCKLAND, Aiarch 27. Williajm. >Al;nleo|m, aged 29, taxidriver, was to-day sent to gaol for one month, for being in a slate of intoxication while in charge of his car, in Upper Queen Street on Sunday morning bust. “Here is a taxi driver who was drunk and who has been twice before the Court,” «aid Mr Hunt. “Probation is out- of the question. He is sentenced to one month’s imprisonment and I direct that no license to drive a car he issued to him for three years. He is fortunate that I do not make it three 'months.”
EXCEPTION TO CRITICISM. AVAIROA, Alarcli 27. Strong exception was taken at today’s meeting of the Farmers’ Union at the visiting farmers’ criticism of New Zealand beef, the members considering that the tour had been badly arranged, tho visitors missing the IVminion’s fin",out . beef producing/ country, and that otherwise this unfair statement would never have Ire on made. Such untrue criticism would do great harm'to-the Dominion, and should be strongly refuted. DEATH AT MOTOR. CAR WHEEL. WELLINGTON, March 28. An elderly man, John Startup, had a seizure and died at the wheel, "’bile driving a car on the Hiitt- Road late last night. The car began to swerve but Airs Startup, who was in the front seat managed to got control a,no stopped it just as it was about to crash into a post. Only slight injuries were done. An ambulance ear came hv and after som< time doctors were procured but could do nothing as life was extinct. A FIRE. NAPIER, Aiarch 28. The Hawkes Bay steam laundry, a large wooden building in Thaikery street, Napier, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The family had a narrow escape, after being awakened by a pet- dog and parrot both of wliL' perished. Two firemen were slightly injured and the occupier, Howell, received a badly cut hand while esonu ins. The building was owned by Contain Holme, late of Sydney. T u buildings were insured for £2.509 in the Sun Office, plant £2“5 in the Run, and CSOO in the State Office.
