TRAIN SERVICE TO WEST COAST
IMPROVEMENT LIKELY. CHRISTCHURCH, Alareli 27. An intimation that the Railway Department lias under serious consideration the question of running an express train between Christchurch ami the West L'oiniv on .Mondays tliioiigiiout the year in place m the existing slower train, was given to the Railways and Transport Committee of llie Canterbury Progress League yesterday afternoon by Air F. Pawson, Railway Business Agent for Canterbury. The question arose as a result of a •suggestion' that a" daily express service should be run from the Christmas holidays until Easter in order to meet the convenience of tourists desiring to visit the West Coast. . Air PawM'Mi said that, if if was found possible to put on an express train on Mondays, that would give an express service on four days a week throughout the year. In regard to train running, it had to be taken into consideration - that the railways had to be managed as a business concern. The Department had to look closely into the cost of improvements to the service before'deciding upon them, and he did not think there.-wjis any likelihood of an. express train being run on every ditv <?f the week. There was, however, every likelihood of getting an express tiain on. ATrtndays.
The committee' decided to forward a letter to Af Pawson supporting liis recommendation to-the .Department that an express train should be run on Mondays. ' “ ... ; i r< ■ :
