BATHER RESCUED,

A girl bather at the mercy of a strong seaward current was rescued, at Opunake yesterday afternoon by George Harrison, champion bellman ol New Zealand for 1929, and a member of the Opunake Life Saving Club. Harrison fought his way lor about 20.) yards in a heavy swell. He did not pause to tid e off bis trousers and coat, which lie cure oser bis bathing costume. and reached the girl about one minute before Norman Faulkner, ol the Opunake life-saving team, arrived with the belt, after a fast sprint. The girl, who lives at Westown, New Plymouth, but whose name could not be ascertained at a late hour to-night, kept her presence of mind. She was an able swimmer, but not strong enough to counter the abnormal conditions obtaining fr the past two or three days. WORKER BADLY BURNED. AUCKLAND, Alarcli 25. Extensive burns about the limbs and body were received by John Stanley Lat'toj aged eighteen, when engaged in melting glue at the paint factory ol Phillips and impev, Limited, Newniaiket, to-day. With his clothes on fire Potto rushed from the building, and rolled in some grass in an effort to extinguish the flames, but it was not until he was wrapped in blankets by other workmen that this was accomplished. He was melting glue over a gas jet when tbe glue suddenly burst into flames. No damage was done to the building.

COAL PROSPECTOR AIISSING

Search parties of police are scouring the ranges between AVhatawhata and Raglan for a missing coal prospector, William Paul Brown, 53, married, of Glenafton. Brown, in company with John Scott Thomas entered the ranges on Saturday to prospect for coal. When Thomas was preparing the evening meal, Brown wandered from the camp and since then no trace of him has been found.

SUICIDE

CHRISTCHURCH, March 25

A retired railway servant, Alfred Derhridge, aged 72, was missing from his home at Port Levy on Sunday morning. In the afternoon a search party found his body on a hillside a mile from his home with the tliroat cut. At the inquest today, Air La-wry, S.M., returned a verdict that Derhridge committed suicide while of unsound mind.

ROT ATMANS CONFERENCE AUCKLAND. March 25.

Of the twenv-four New Zealand delegates who attended the Pacific Conference of Rotations at Sydney, Messrs G . Rhodes and F. H. Leonard returned hv the Maunganui to-day. The whole of the arrangements, Mr Rhodes says, were splendidly organised, and the Club of Sydeny deserves the highest praise for the dinner and hall which concluded the conference, at tended by seven to eight hundred. A Japanese youth, sponsored by members of Rotary, is to take up resoidenee in Auckland to complete his education as a universiv student. His father is a merchant with headquarters iif Tokio.

A SUGGESTED PROHIBITION. AUCKLAND, March 25

At the bmnrtiul meeting of the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes, a remit was carried to the effect that women and girls should be prohibited from drinking intoxicating liquor in public places. The remit will be forwarded to the National Council of Women.
