NAVAL CONFERENCE

PROPOSAL TO ADJOURN

LONDON, March 25,

Signor Grandi, during a meeting wiw. Mr MacDonald, suggested the Conference should adjourn for six months, and in the meantime Italy would try to reach an amicable agreement and each Power should underiake lor the time being not to start build-

ing any ships. The “Daily Herald” says Mr MacDonald is considering the proposal.

The British spokesman confirmed the report of the Italian proposal to adjourn the Conference for six months to enable French and Italians to attempt a compromise of their difficulties. Meanwhile the Three Power Pact should be considered.

The spokesman gave an assurance that the proposal was momentarily prf aside because experts are continuing an endeavour to find a .solution on a Five Power basis. He admitted the Italian suggestion was worth while in certain circumstances.

Mr Stimson conferred with Mr MacDonald this morning, and the heads of the delegations will meet this afternoon to examine the general situation in light of the experts’ discussions. I* is assumed that M. Dumesnil will re. present France.
