The death took place on Friday morning at Birchfleld, of Lorna Lucy, daughter of Mr and Airs \ T . Kirkwood. Deceased was 22 years of age.

Afr Elijah Merchant, one of the early ""■sidents of Karamea, passed away in the Duller Hospital on Sunday. Deceased was a native of Somersetshire, England, 83 years of age. and had been in New Zealand for 56 years. He leaves a grown up family.

There was a pleasing “talkie” programme at the Princess Theatre last evening when a well diversified entertainment was provided. Valentine, formerly of Hokitika, where lie was Inspector of Schools, now residing in New Plymouth, prepared a lecture on “The Golden Coast,” which lie gave last rear with success at the Victoria League, London, when Home. He has been asked to repeat the lecture at New Plymouth, and proposes doing so at an early date. This is very useful publicity and must be of va’-ae in attracting attention to Westland. Mr Valentine lias been supplied with a number of copies of the “Charm of Franz- Joref,” for free distribution at bis lecture, and through that means special attention will be drawn to the glaciers of South Westland. It is pleasing to find with so many exCoasters there is always a kindly feeling for “Beautiful Westland,” and a desire to send more people to enjoy its beauties.
