PETROL TAX

INCH EASE SUGGESTED

TAUItANGA, March 21

A conference of representatives of the Rotorua, Opotiki, Whakatane, ' and Tauranga County Councils was held here to-day. Mr W .F. Sinclair, chairman of the Tauranga Country Council presided.

After a discussion a resolution was adopted that it be a recommendation from the conference to the Government that the petrol tax be increased to such a figure as would enable the Government completely to finance all future maintenance and construction costs on all primary main highways in a permanent manner. An amendment was rejected to add to the motion that from time to time increased portions of the funds from the proposed increased petrol tax he allocated for the purpose of . paying interest and sinking fund on loans already' raised hy local bodies for constructing primary highways. It was decided to submit the recotn>n<>n'l«tinn as a reni't to the Counties’ Conference, to circularise all Councils in bighwavs districts asking their supnort of the remit,, and to send a copy to the Prime Minister, the Minister j for Public Works, and the Highways Board.
