EIGHT-OAR CHAMPIONSHIP

OTAGO’S EASY VICTORY

AUCKLAND, March 22

The third annual intfer-provineial eight-oar rowing championship of New Zealand took place over a three-mile course on the Whan River this afternoon. The race resulted in a comfortable win by four lengths for the Otago crew. The most stirring incident of the contest was a great fight for the second place over the last halfmile between Auckland and Marlborough. The South Island crew gained the honour by hall a length. Tin time for the race was 2.1 minutes, hut the Otago crew could have reduced that if they had hcon pressed.

After the first quarter of a mile, the Otago crew, rowing a hard catch and tearing the stroke through, quickly forged ahead and steadily increased (heir lead to win without much exertion by four lengths. The winners were easily the best crew of the day.
