SYDNEY, March 21
A throe-roomed wooden cottage near Newcastle was burned and a two-years-old girl perished in the flames. A baby boy, four-months-old, was also critically burned. The mother of the children, All’s Alusgrave, of Plcxbam, put the children to sleep and
went into a neighbour’s-place. Shortly afterwards the house was in flames, ail it was only possible to rescue the boy.
DEATH SENTENCE.
FOR AYIFE MURDER
SYDNEY, March 21
The prisoner Solomon was found guilty of having murdered bis wile at Parramatta on December 28th. He was sentenced to death. Though the jury made no rocomnuxlation for mercy, the prisoner s case will be considered by the Executive Council.
RAILWAY UNIONS (POLICY
SYDNEY, March 24
While it is expected'that tin; Railway Unions will oppose the proposal to work a forty-eight hours week it is not likely that there will be an unqualified rejection of the suggestions of the new Chief Railway Commissioner. AL Cleary.
A committee was appointed to-day at a conference rtf the Unions concerned to frame a policy.' This will lie submitted to the conference for ratification to-morrow.
GAOL TRAGEDY
PRISONER FOUND STRANGLED
MELBOURNE, March 24
Robert Turnbull, aged 33, who was arrested a few days ago on a charge of wounding, was found strangled in his cell at the Metropolitan Gaol at Coburg. His nose and mouth were stuffed with pieces of clothing, and his pyjamas cord was round his throat.
TRUCKS RUN AWAY,
ON BLUE MOUNTAIN LINE
Sydney; March 24
When the coupling between two goods trucks broke, nine loaded trucks and the guards’ van bolted down a grade near Lawson on the Blim Mountains. After lurching aiding for half a mile of the track, they were thrown off by the safety catch points. The guard bad a miraculous,escape, as bis van finished its dive on,' the roadway 12 feet below. ' The coals from a fire i,n the guard’s van set alight the woodwork. The guard scrambled to safety through a window.
Severe damage was done to the trucks, goods and lines,
