DUNEDIN, March 21

Gilbert William Lewis, a young man,, a farmer at Springvale, near Alexandra, was arrested on Thursday evening and charged at Alexandra this morning, before Justices, with 1 the theift of 20 sheep at Springvale on March 10 the property of Edward J. lies, of Chatto Creek, Accused was remanded to appear before the Magistrate at Alexandra on April 10. Bail was granted in accused’s own recognisance of £SOO and two sureties of £250 each.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE,

MASTERTON, March -21

Michael Murphy, aged 23, on a charge of having attempted to commit suicide at Masterton on March 15, was placed on probation for twelve months, a 1 fipeoial condition being that accused abstain absolutely from intoxicating liquor, and apply for a prohibition order for a period of . one year. Murphy,, who appeared before Mr J. .Miller, S.M., this morning was found in a room of the Green’s Hotel with his wrist cut with a razor, and was removed to the Masterton Hospital. He was under the influence of:liquor at the time.

Notification lias been received from Commissioner of . Police Mcllveney, that w 7 ith the approval of the Hon. Mr L. K. Sidey, he has placed Dunedin on the same-' police status as Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, by appointing an Inspector of Police in charge of Dunedin city and suburbs.

A young man, Frederick Troughton, a motor mechanic, employed by E. S. Brownie, was terribly injured by burns this morning, He was in a pit draining benzine from under a car when he was enveloped in flames. He was hospitalled in a critical condition.

Mr Donald (Minister of Industries and Commerce) row intends to substitute a committee of three, whose names will be announced later.
