Revealing why the la.te Lord Bal-four-never married, a close friend told the Mail that he only once fell in love but the romance ended with the sudden death of the woman lie' loved. She was the Hon. Mary Catherine Lyttelton, daughter of Lord- Lyttelton, Gladstone’s brother-in-law, and sister of the late Alfred. She died in the year 1875 when she was ‘24 years of age.
“She actually died,” said the friend, “as Mr Balfour (as he then was) was on his way to seo her with a ring which he had just purchased. He was then twenty-seycn, and throughout his long life lie remained faithful to her memory, and never married.” " THE BURIAL. LONDON, March 21. The body of the late Lord Balfour is being conveyed to King’s Cross. This is the. first stage of the journey to AVhittingham, / whore he is being buried.
