LAUNCH DESTROYED
FIRE FOLLOWS EXPLOSION.
AUCKLAND, March 19
Fire following a loud explosion destroyed the 40ft launch Tot, off Mangere Point in Manakau Harbour. The launch, which was owned by W. White and J. J. Craig, Ltd., left shortly before five o’clock with sand barges in low for the sand banks in the lower reaches of the harbour. Off 'be point it ran on to a bank and immediately nti explosion occurred and the engine room burst into flames. Mr White, who was on board, considers that when the launch viniok, ihe impact must have overturned a di nm of benzine and brought it into contact with a hot pipe, Fiames soon swept the launch and nothing was saved. The decking ind fittings, including a 25-horse-power engine, as well ns the personal belongings of Mr White, were destroyed and the hull was burned to the water-line. TFie Tot was insured for £6OO with the London and Lancashire Insurance Company.
