YOUNG AVO3IAX’S DEATH

HAMILTON, 31 arch 21

Admitted to Waikato Hospital with internal injuries sustained in a motor cycle accident at Mangaiti, Iris Rose Blackwell, aged 23, died last night. Deceased was riding inside a chair, when the machine overturned.

SETTLERS BEARING BURDEN,

NO RATES PAID BY FOREST SERVICE.

The State Forest Service pays no rates in respect of the lands it occupies. The settlers of Puriri, at a meeting 04 Friday, asked Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., to endeavour to have the law altered. It was stated that of 263,000 acres in the Thames County, 00,000 were lo ked up in State forests or Crown Lands, while 140,000 acres were unoccupied. Nevertheless, the County Council had to maintain 70 miles of roads. The ratepayers on the flat area, occupying some 10,000 acres, were heavily rated to keep these roads in repair.

Mr Samuel said that Puriri was not the only district that had to face these problems. He was of the opinion that the Forest Service Department should contribute in rates to relieve the set-thi-s He promised to bring the matter before Parliament.
