ADMIRAL BYRD

DU.NEDIN, March 20
Admiral Byrd will not sail with the City of New York on Sunday. His route will be announced to-morrow. Last night the New Zealand Company of -Master Mariners honoured Captain Melville, master of the City of New York conferring on him the distinction of life membership of the Coy. He is the first foreign seaman so honoured. Members were present from Wellington and other parts of the Dominion,
THROWN FROM HORSE,
PALMERSTON N., March 30.
At the Oroua Downs Sports Meeting, George Lamb, 17, was thrown from his horse during the pony leaping competition, owing to the animal striking a rail in the hurdle. He was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital unconscious, suffering from concussion, and to-day partially recovered consciousness.
Y.M.C..A. CHRISTCHURCH, March 20
The Tenth Annual Conference of the New Zealand Y.M.C.A., this morning, Mr J. W. Hillary presiding. Til an address to delegates. Rev. J. Lawson Robertson said:—“We are not going to frighten. youth by ramming down their throats what we were taught. Religion is not a static thing, it is always progressing.”
SUMMER VACATION,
DUNEDIN, March 20,
A proposal discussed by the Education. Board this morning was that the annual summer vacation of primary schools be- taken in February and March instead of December and January in order to get the best weather, was decided by all conference bodies interested. It was mentioned that if the proposal was adopted the Government be approached to extend the excursion fares to early March,
