THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
PERSONALITY VERSUS TALKIE MUSIC.
It is undeniable that a great deal of money has been wasted on the education of boys and girls, men and women, who have little or no real musical ability, and that much suffering has thereby been inflicted on listeners in private and in public. If all our music is to be “canned,” this waste and suffering will be avoided. Surely, however, it would not be good for society if all private effort to master music and interpret it for others were to cease, and the visible personality of the performer were to disappear ' entirely. Nothing can take the place of this personality; hard work and sacrifice are good for the soul;, and the world would lose something precious and vital if it took all its music, as a city takes its water, from a few unseen sources. —Auckland Star.
