NELSON, March 17

In an interview with a “Mail” reporter to-day, Hon. Mr Forbes (Minister of Lands) stated that, in pursuance of the Government’s policy oif closer settlement, his Department had at present forty-five sections of improved land which would be disposed of by ballot in the near future. These included Wilden Settlement, near Edievale, Southland, comprising eleven sections of grazing and mixed farming land, which would be open from the 31st inst. There was also the Roseberry Settlement, Oamaru, comprising nine sections of dairying and agricultural land, which would be opened on the 7th prox. There was also the Tapanui Settlement (Otago) of nine sections to be opened on the Ist prox.. and the Clunes Settlement (Methven) of eight sections of mixed farming land to be opened on 7th prox. “In addition to these activities,” said the Minister, “my Department is offering for selection a large number of unimproved Crown sections, with respect to which liberal advances will be made to the selectors to enable them to carry out the necessary improvements. As provided in the legislation of last session, the Advisory Committee appointed under the Act were actively engaged in the field, and additional sections would be offered as the reports came to hand.
