ABUNDANCE OF SWORDFISH

Striped marlin swordfish liave made their appearance off Alercury Bay in large numbers. Four Alatamata men, W. Hutchinson,jF,. W. Hutchinson, D. ,A;I. Hay, and. F. R.,’Gibson, had ns pfiiiany as twelve fish on their lines in one day. They managed to secure four large ones. The launch Dauntless was used.
The party left. Mercury Bay on -Saturday and they hooked three fish straight off on Afereury Bay hank, but lost two through the gear breaking. Another was landed off the hank, while a fourth was caught five miles from Alderman Islands. They estimate they saw between forty and fifty swordfish under their boat at one time. In clear water they could see the fish taking the bait. As one fisherman put it, “they looked like a drove of zebras.” The weights of those caught were: 325. 300, 295, and 272 lbs.
