THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
THE NEGLECTED SOUTH ISLAND: “For a country of its size, New Zealand must be unsurpassed in the variety of its charms in scenery.” In these words the special correspondent of the Otago Times in Invercargill,), Mr J. Griffyth Fairfax, Conservative member of the House of Commons for Norwich in the last Parliament, who lias just completed a tour of most of the chief tourist resorts in both islands, sums up the tourist attractions of the Dominion. He expressed regret, when interviewed, that he was unable to see all tlie attractions, notably the Sounds and the glacier country on the West Coast. Commenting on the advertising of New Zealand’s attractions, Mr Fairfax made pointed reference to the disproportionate publicity given to the North Island resorts as compared with those of the South Island. “I think too much stress is laid on Rotorua and too thermal district in comparison with the many other attractions,” he said. “There is a tendency for people who come to the Dominion for a brjef tour to he encouraged to snend mosjpf their time in the North Island.” ;
