HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, MARCH 'l4th

The .Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present .-—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), D. J. Evans, T. W. Duff, E. W. Hcenan, A. It. Eleock, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, J. King, and J. L. Turner. An apology was made for the absence of Dr' Teichelmami. The minutes were confirmed <nd outward correspondence approved.

•MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The Mayor referred to the recent loss sustained by the death of lion. H. L. Michel, who had been a member of the Borough Council for a great number of years and who had been Mayor for a period of thirteen years. He was a self-made man who had filled every public position possible; He wa s an outstanding representative of the pioneers of the district. Mr Michel came here as a youth and had 'teen one of our most prominent citizens. Ho was ot a sympathetic and kindly nature, had plenty of courage, while his private life, as they all knew was of a most exemplary nature. He moved that the Council place on record its deep sense of the loss sustained by the death- of Hon. H. L. Michel, and convey its deepest sympathy "to 'M rs Michel and family.

From tile Chairman, No. 12 District ...Highways Council, Grey mouth, intimating that Main Highways Board will he visiting Hoktika and South Westland 'after .Easter.—Received a deputation to wait on Board;

From the Government Printer, Wellington, intimating that free copy of Local Authorities’ Hand Book would be discontinued, and that the price of the publication, i'f required, is 8s 6d.—Received. From the New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., ' Christchurch, intimating that the following quantities of meat ere delivered into Hokitika during the month of January, 1930:—11 sheep, 2 lambs, 2 cattle.—Received. From D. C. Streeter, Hokitika, asking Council to approach the Railway Department to have guard rails placed at Weld Street crossing.—Received.

; Fro-m Texas Coy., . (Australasia), Ltd..,, Greymoutli, application for permission to erect a 42inch circular illuminated ; hanging sign at Kinvan’s Garage, Hokitika.—Received. From the Manager, Abattoirs, application for telephone at his residence.—Received.

From Secretary, Hokitika Fire Board, asking Council to elect representative to fill vacancy on Board, caused by the death of.the late Hon. H. L. Michel.—. Received;! left to Mayor and Town Clerk to look into, to nominate Mr W. O. Braddon to the position.

From Wm. Wilson, (agent for Mr S. F. Brown), intimating that Mr (Brown had purchased 'Section 225 at the corner of llevell and Weld Streets adjoining Halleiistein Bros., and is erecting a building thereon. To square Mrißrown’S section, it will be necessary \ri impinge o'ir the Borough right-of-way, (i.e. a continuation of Weld Street on to the beach), to the extent of three perches, and intimating that Mr Brown is prepared to purchase or lease this area of the street from the Council.—Received. From Mrs Nightingale, Fitzherbert Street, asking that Council clear her frontage of blackberry.—Received. From W. Rowe, Jollie Street, intimating that he is erecting a building on Section 129, Hoffman Street, and asking that Council clear the growth off the street, in order that lie can cart timber to the section. — .'Received; referred to the Public Works Committee to attend to.

From W. Smith, Hampden Street, application for four loads of sand at the frontage of his property, as he wishes to . improve the street frontage.—Received; request granted.

REPORT'S

The Treasurer reported :— Receipts, £OO4 17s 9d; payments £904 lls Id; debit balance £7BO 19s Gd.—Received. Accounts amounting to £2OB 2s 4d were passed for payment. From Manager of Abattoirs reporting during February there were slaughtered 14 cows, 26 heifers, 57 bullocks, 205 sheep, 112 lambs, 14 pigs, 15 calves; condemned 1 cow. Foe's for month £66 10s (same month last year £67 13s).—Received.

FOREMAN’S REPORT

Sections of Gibson’s Quay footpath were chipped. Brittan Street and Rolleston Street were cleaned, ’the growth being cut on both sides. Sale Street was cleared of growth, and a section gravelled. Wold Street was chipped and a part gravelled. Tarsealing was carried out, and is ■ now being continued in Weld 'Street lrom llevell Street to Railway crossing. A drain was.renewed at the corner of Brittan and Park Streets, and a drain was put across the "footpath in Brittan Street to Mr Goodfellow’s property; a crossing was also put in liero. The water connection was repaired at Mr Michel’s in Hall Street. Connections were put in at the following places at Ferguson’s in Weld Street, Ccderman’s in Jollie Street, and Goodfellow’s in Brittan Street, and repairs were carried out to pipes at Cass Square. -A large number of leaks were repaired about the town, while one pipe burst beyond the Reservoir on Hau Han hill, and several leaks on the Lake road were repaired.

The Mayor reported with Air Evans and tlie Town Clerk, lie had paid a visit to Lake Kanieri to inspect the proposed works of Kanieri Electiic Ltd., at Lake Kanieri, in connection with increase electric power, including a new and larger race, and the proposed means to safeguard the Borough water supply which he thought would prove quite satisfactory. They had also inspected Vie pipe laying in progress under the supervision of Foreman Chesterman. Some 'iTbn. pipes' were' 'required"'and these had .been' - authorised the Foreman to procure some iron pipes wriioh would prove satisfactory, and to go on with the work.—Received and action taken approved. Mr Meenan moved that the Inspector be instructed to take every possible action against speeding motorists, and that the police bo asked to co-operate. Seconded by Mr- Evans and carried.

Mr Turner urged that action be taken to prevent parking of ears in Re veil Street. It was resolved to have some extra domes placed in position at several street intersections. The Council rose at 8.40 p.m.
