WELLINGTON, March 14. " V The closing down at the end of the current month of- the. remaining Forestry relief work camps will involve the'discharge ' of' 440 men. Jhis is announced by • the ' CommisiVmer of State'Forests,. Mr Taverner who. also indicates the possibilities of their reemployment when the planting season starts again.
The Minister states the majority of the relietf works in the programme set out in October have been carried to completion, and only two parties nehiahi on - .thevVdrk-e outside the normal seasonal routine. These parties are a&^Rgtoi'ua,y/340 ■. jß?en) and.-,at, Tapanui (100 men.) “The extra, funds provided fastyear by the Government,” says the Minister, “for this forestry work have been £120,000 in addition to the normal appropriations, and an extra complement, averaging 700 men, has been maintained in employment through out the summer season, and besides' contributing so largely towards the relief of unemployment and preparing the way for a big programme this winter, if required, there has been brought about, a great improvement in the exfsting stands of j'oung exoctic trees.
