ANTARCTIC OCEAN
MAWSON’S DISCOVERS:
DIVIPED BY A RIDGE
(Australian Press Association)
SYDNEY, March 13
A copyright wireless from the “Discovery” dated March 11th says: “Now. that we are definitely turned towards civilisation, all hands are pleasurably anticipating the prospect of an addition of fresh vegetables to their diet. Our potatoes and onions kept well, despite the adverse climatic conditions, but they were finished long ago. The excellence of our 'preserved food stores is attested by the fact that there has been no sickness among the members of-the expedition, and some have put on weight. Our wireless communication with Australia is now good, and it has not even been affected by the luminescent auroral phenomena visible to-night in the Southern sky. We are now eleven hundred miles from Cape Leeuwi on a direct run from Kerguelen Island. The weather since, leaving that Island lias helped us to continue our marine investigations with the object of defining the character and movements of the waters entering the eastern, or Australian, Antarctic basin. Along this front we have already found a striking submarine ridge connecting the Kerguelen' Plateau with 1 the Antarctic Continent, thus dividing into two compartments the deeper waters of the southern ocean.
