DENTAL HYGIENE
NEW, DIRECTOR APPOINTED
WELLINGTON, March 11
The appointment was announced today, by the Public Service Commissioner, of Mr J. L. Saunders, who at present is Deputy Director, as Director of plental Hygiene in succession tv Mr T. A. .Hunter, who is about to retire. •• .■
Ml” Saunders was born in Dunedin, a/ son of the Rev. William. Saunders, and TecOiVed' -his education' v " _ 'at" “the: ; _.;Scho<>l andAUtago University; where he graduated Bachelor, of Dental Surgery in 1913. He was- then appointed Dental Surgeon at the Christchurch, Hospital a position which he occupied until the outbreak of the Great War in August. 1914. Mr Saunders had., alwayji been interested in military matters and at this time held a territorial commission. He > left on active service with the Otago Regiment, and served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and Prance until the .end of'the war. He held successively rut position of Adjutant of the first Battalion, Otago -Regiment, adjutant of the. Second Battalion. Otago Regiment, and Officer Commanding the 4th (reserve) Battalion, Otago Regiment. ,Hd;, received the D.S.O. for his war sendees, and was mentioned in dis-
patches. After his return from the war Mr Saunders engaged in private dental practice in Christchurch for five of sii years, and towards the close of 1924 he joined the Health Department asD e P u ty-Director, in which position he has been in charge of the training of tlie dental nurses. Lieutenant Colonel Saunders is at present the Commanding Officer of the Birst Wellington Regiment. Mr Hunter was Director of Dental Services with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces during the war with thp rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and was awarded the C.B.E. in recognition or his services.
