EARTHQUAKE AREA

THE SHATTERED MUNTAIXS.

NELSON, March. 8

A message from Karamea states that Mr G. C. Black, M.P., for Motueka arrived in Karamea by aeroplane Ifroiu Westport, after a successul flight of sixtv-five minutes over the uninhabited part of Motueka electorate, in the centre of the earthquake area. The? courses of the Mokihinui, Little Wanganui, Karamea and Oparara Rivers were traversed, also the main highway, from the bluffs to Corbvale, then to ’Taffy town and Tenanu. “I have seen nothing else in . the earthquake area which speaks more plainly of the devastation of Jure

said Mr Black on arrival, “than doef# the wonderful panorama which Captain MacGregor and I had 0000 feet above the isolated Corbyvale settlement. As one looks south-east on every side the hundreds of slips simply stare at one. In the distance, towards Lyell and Mur ehison, the mountains are carpeted by the largest slips in the zone. The three rivers and their tributaries are blinded by tons of debris.. Lake Hanlon looks its old self from the air. The slips on the highway are small compared with the back country. The geologists will have to travel this hinterland to really arrive at the real effeefi df the arthquake. Towards Heaphy and Collingwood there is very little change in the contour of the country.’*•
