OVERSEER’S REPORT
I have the honor to report upon the rogtess of work during the month of thruary.
NORTHERN RIDING
Kumara to Kapitea North Bank— The oontraetbrs have commenced their work and completed the clearing and a portion of drafting. Kumara to Kapitea, South Bank.— The contractors have completed the clearing, and are now engaged constructing the outlet to the diameter pipe culvert. One Mile 'Road Widening.—All the grading, forming, and drainage is completed, also .one-’-twelve-inch diameter concrete pipe culvert. The work of metalling, will be in hand on March oth.
MAINTENANCE
Portions of Arahura, Valley were cleared of blackberry and graded from Havill’s Corner to the Railway Bridge, and defective covering removed and replaced with silver pine timber on a culvert on,!.Two Mile Road. Portionof Batter’s Track’were cleared and impaired, and /trees removed from Arahura River-Browning Pass Track. Defective timber was: removed and replaced oft :one '.of; the stream spans of Mnlfrov’s Bridge,
CENTRAU RIDING
Station Road"Extension.—The contractors have completed the wliole of the work, including forming and metal-
ling, drainage, and culvert construction; in a very creditable manner. The. work throughout has a clean and workmanlike appearance, and the roat. is open for traffic. Vine Creek Bridge, Station Road.— The long planking, railing, and hand wires, wheel guards etc., were placed in position immediately after completion of Station Road. Upper .Ko'kgtahi Road Widening.— The work of clearing, grading and the greater portion of formation completed during the month. Arthurstowii Road Widening,—The whole of the clearing, formation, drain and culvert construction is completed; also 35 chains of metalling. This work should be finally Completed in March.
Mahi'napua. Creek Clearing—The work of clearing fallen timber, snags, also growth and obstructions from the creek channel was continued and the vote for this work practically exhausted. The track from Shanghai Road to the site of the jetty was completed, also the piling in connection with the construction of the jetty.
AIAINTENANCE
Repairs were effected to very bad holes on Municipal Road; also culvert repairs on Camelback and Wall Roads, and repairs with gravel to the upper end of Upper Kokatahi Road. Watertables were cleaned and scrub- cleared from the cuttings on Hokitika-Han Hau Road, and blackberry cleared from the’ lower .end of Arthurstown Road, and concrete pipe culvert constructed on Ale Arthur Road.
SOUTHERN RIDING
Ruatapu-Alahinapua Road Metalling. This work was finally completed on Februry 10th., giving motor connection as far as Lake Mahinapua. AVaitaha Lagoon Bridge and Approaches.—This work is practically completed, but the- filling may require attention oeasionally as it is all hea-.li sand, the only material available. Petersen Road Extension—Balance of Grant was expended in improving the gravelled turnout at the terminus of old metalling, Petersen Road. Three Mile Track repairs were continued, watertables cleaned, soft portions of the track surface repaired with fascines, also with corduroy, 250 links in length.
MAINTENANCE.
Repairs were effected with gravel to Ruatapu Road from the Alain Highway, to Ruatapu Store. Repairs were also effected to AVoolhou.se and AVaitaha Settlement Roads. The Roadman attended to repairs to roads m tne Inter-Wanganui District. Detour lload was repaired where necessary, this road having been cut up during the wet weather. Alotor worn holes and depressions were repaired with gravel on AVataroa Flat Rond, and a fallen tree removed from Richardson j.ioad.
REPORT ON HIGHWAYS
I have the honor to report npon the progress ot work on the Secondary Highways for the month of February.
■Lower Kokntahi—McArthur Hoad ■was re-graded to collect all fine gravel from the outer sides to the centre of roadway from. Kanieri to Graham’s Hotel, a distance of 7 miles. Motor worn -holes and depressions were repaired with gravel over a distance ol JO miles, using 108 cubic yards of gravel. Encroaching willow growth .overhanging the road was cleared from the western side of the road on the flat below Lake Kanieri Road Junction and from • the lower side of Gimmick Creek Bridge, No. 1. Encroaching blackberry growth was cleared from
the abutments of Duck Crook Bridge No. 4, and western abutment of Harris Creek Bridge, No. 4. The lower portion of road from Kanieri to Lake Road Junction received a light coat of line surface gravel in sections extending over a distance of 50 chains, 45 cubic yards of gravel being used for the purpose. The railing of Graham’s Creek Bridge near Lower Kokatahi School was painted white, the collar straps of railing being painted black.
Lake Kanieri Road was repaired wnere necessary, 36 cubic yards of gravel being used in repairs to motor worn holes and low places. Watertables were cleaned over a distance of 14 chains, and en. Teaching blackberry and fern growth, cleared fiom the roadside for a distance of 25 chains. Ihe upper side truss, four transomes. railing. a portion of decking, and the lining of the easte.n abutment, were renewed with heart of rimu timber in McKay’s Creek Bridge. The railing ai Stoney Creek, Stripland Creek anct McKay’s Creek Bridges were painted white, collar straps and iron work painted black. Upper Kokatahi Road.-—Motor worn holes and depressions were repaired over a distance of 3.1 miles, 20 cubic yards of gravel being used from the roadside dumps, and 35 cubic yards carted on t<> the road. The approach railing on each side of Duck Geek Bridge. No. 3, totalling 175 lineal feet of double railing, was painted white.
