VALEDICTORY

The Nurses’ Social Hall at the Westland Hospital recently was the scene of jollification when Sisters, 1 Nurses and friends assembled to b.'d farewell to Sister Peters, who has been on the nursing staff for over six jears. The hall was tastefully decorated with streamers and greenery, while the excellent .music was supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra under the capable supervision of the High Master, Mr A. Lawn. Dancing was enjoyed till after midnight' when the happy party broke up and the nurses assembled and presented S’ster T'etc-rs with a gold mounted Parker pencil-as a small token of esteem.

A pleasant function took place at the Mental Hospital on Friday afternoon w hen the members of the clerical and nursing staffs met to say farewell, and make a presentation to Mr A. McDonald, who has been transferred to the Public Works Department, Wellington. Dr Hayes, the Medical Superintendent, made the presentation, which consisted of a travelling rug and suit case. Dr Hayes in his speech paid a eulogistic tribute to tho recipient, and expressed regret that the exigencies of the public service rendered it necessary to transfer officer’s frequently, but congratulated Mr McDonald on his fine promotion and wished him success in life and service. Dr Hayes speech was generally supplemented by. members of both staffs. Mr McDonald in his reply was deeply affected and spoke feelingly. He felt sorry, he said, to be leaving the position he had held for six and a half years, but the call, of promotion was stimulating to an officer interested in his work. He said he was pleased and surprised at the very useful presents the staffs had given him, and he hoped never to forget the mAny friends he had made at ; the local institution. Matron Drum- -

mond and her staff of nurses then dispensed afternoon tea. Witlv the singing of Auld Lang Syne, a pleasant function terminated. Mr MacDonald left last evening for Wellington, and commences duty there on Monday next.
