YOUNG WOMAN INJURED.

PALMERSTON NORTH, March 4, Panic-stricken try the sight ol Hie Auckland express Hiundering down on a. motor van in which she was travelling. Miss G. Young, a- student at [lie missionary s- Sum! at l.ongburn, jumped as the speeding van endeavoured to heat the engine across Cook Street crossing this afternoon. She was struck by Hie cowcatcher and. hur! d off, the track, while the ear escaped- by inches.
The driver had not sren the train until lie was almost on the crossing? and lie then accelerated to get across. Miss Young endeavoured to escape by throwing hersell from the van. She is now suffering from head injuries, and is in the hospital. DARING THEFT AT HOTEL. ISTR-ATFORD, -March 4. Burglars entered the Midhurst Hotel and the licensee, Mr A, E. Gerrard. reports the loss of a- large sum of money taken from the pockets ol his trousers, which were left on the chair in his bedroom. On rising lie discovered the lovor his trousers which later wore found thrown over a fence near the budding. Tne key of the hotel-sale was in the packet also, hut it was no-t made use of. The police aie investigating.

MURCHISON, March G. Consequent’ upon the earthquake, extensive emanations of natural flammable gases' ha-ve been discoverer during the week by .Messrs John A. Spencer (petroleum engineer) and C B. Crevsoy in the centre of the township of Murchison. Samples wore collected for analysis, it being believed, from the nature of the flame to contain otanc, which is a component of petroleum. The gas emanations a-c wiihln easy reach ol . the upheav.il b which several lives were lost.

The question of. the provision leu alleviating unemployment was one o' the matters dealt with at the 'Conference of the Municipal Association. Considerable discussion took place and it was finally decided to submit a scheme to the .Government.
