Westland Acclimatisation and Tourist Society

THURSDAY, MARCH Gth.

The Council of the above Society met at tile County Chambers at 7.30 p.m. Present: Dr Toieholmaiin (President). Messio Baker, H. Wells. Armstrong, Bradcion, Godfrey, Paterson, Lloyd, Appleton, Garnet Perry and Evans.

The Chairman referred to the death of Hon H. L. Michel, who bad been so prominent in public affairs for so many years, and moved a vote of condolence with Mrs Michel and family, agreed to. members standing. The minutes were confirmed and the outward correspondence approved.

IN WAR I) CORRESPONDENCE.

From Minister in Charge ol tourist Resorts stated that the matter of huts between .Maintain and the Haast was the subject of a report from the Public Works Depart met, and the matter will receive attention when the estimates arc under consideration later. Received with thanks.

From Department of Internal Affairs asking views of Society respecting request from Sou+li Westland lor permission to keep one live pukeko- in captivity.—Received, agreed to but not as a regular practice. From same stating the matter of declaring part of Hokitika, river a bird sanctuary' was tinder 'consideration, asking for, a plan of the area, and enquiring if owners ol property concerned had any objection.—Received. • The Secretary stated the plan had been supplied, and property owners had 'been asKed if they had any objection.

From same, asking further particulars as to latteral boundaries. —Received. Joe Secretary stated the boundary might be fixed at high water mark. So lar o-nq property holder ,vas agreeable and another objected. Two other propc. ty holders were involved. It was resolved to write an

ixplauuloiy letter, making high water nark the boundary, and if necessary eliminate one ol lue islands. A letter was received from Mr J. J. McIntosh strongly supporting the proposal to create a sanctuary, stating the 'indiscriminate use ol pea liife had caused serious i .-ss to Ins stoc... ..•-ides j o-pardising life at times, verbal objeeton was made on helm!; of Mr Houston.

From same thanking the Society for report regarding deer culling, and stating it was now pcrmissable to dispose of venison by those destroying deer. —Received. .

From same stating the regulation regarding tags for drier heads was now revoked.—Received.

From same asking recommendation as to an open season for opossum this year.—-Received and after a short discussion it. was rqsolved to fix Juiii and July, as before, the Grey District and Builer Societies to be notified.

From New Zealand Accliinatisatioi Societies’ Association forwarding copy of letter appreciating deer culling methods by the Canterbury Society lor the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.. —Received. Front same notifying conference regarding deer culling at Christchurch on May 7. —Received, delegates to be appointed neFt meeting. Front North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society replying that the application for ova had been referred to the Garden Committee. —Received. From Otago Acclimatisation Society hoping to suppy ova it sufficient eggs could be collected; prices os per - '101)3 for brown trout; 7s Gd for rainbow.— Received.

From Southland Society doubting ability to supply ova.—Received and correspondence referred to the Hatchery Committee to go into the matter of local shipping this season. From Auckland Acclimatisation Society supplying particulars as to the purchase of pheasant chickens.—Received. An offer to supply chicken pheasants at 10s each at Pokena win received, and it was decided to order 3GO birds for delivery next season. From Bretts Annual enquirying respecting to a page advertisement for the Christmas number.—'Received and referred to the President to ascertain what local support there would be to district advertisement in one of the large publications. From H. Thomson, Mananui, agreeing not to place any further timber waste in Mahinapua Creek, and regretting it had been done in the past. —Received.

From Ranger reporting on. district inspections during February.—Received.
