Keen interest, was manifested in the races at the VVanganui-Taranak: Centre of the Amateur Athletic At j sociation’s sports meeting to-night, when George Golding (Australia) and Loo Lennoml (America) comp-tcd respectively, Golding won his event, (In 440yds race, in beautiful si vie Iron T. Strange. Lermond looked like winning ;be KKXJyds, but going round the back ioi the last time. L>. Evans, who ,vi handy, made a sudden apurt to tfi* leading position, and maim•lined ilii to win. The time*, 2.18, is in tile vicinity of the New Zealand record. Results:—
440yds invitation Handicap.- G. Golding (Australia) scr 1; M. Strang* .(Palmerston North)’ 10yds 2. 'The' other starters were: G. Irving v Ha-' wera) 12yds, and T. Darby (Wanganui) 18yds. In going round the back the surprising tiling happened. Pawson and McDonald dropped out, and smid* •;!.% Evans shot to the* front. Seeming i Lermond was taken by surprise. He put in a strong challenge, but win stalled off, Evans winning amid an outburst of enthusiasm in 2.18.
