CAPTURE OF GREY BROTHERS
WHO WILL GET PE WARD? THREE SETS OF CLAIMANTS CHRISTCHURCH, March 1. Who will got the “lire-bug” reward of .1:2.30. The “fire-bugs,” the Grey brothers, have been sentenced and are now beginning their terms in Mount Edeir gaol, but this question arising from their capture and conviction lias yet to be settled. A number of people in Christchurch are now anxiously awaiting the result.
There are three claimants for the reward, and the decision now rests with the. Commissioner of Police. The sympathies of the public generally are with Constable Albert Gillum, who, by In's smartness in arresting the youths was the actual agent in bringing about their conviction. There comes then the detectives, who investigated the crimes before the arrest, and who piled up the evidence so that when once the youths were in custody the police were able to extract the confessions. Lastly there is the claim of Mr A. J. Scrivener. of Christchurch. Mr Scrivener claims that prior to the arrest of the hoys, on information given to him by his son, an acquaintance of the bovs, be was able to tell the nolice certain facts, which threw suspicion on the Gray brothers ns the fire-hues, ft is stated that the police were watebin." the brothers prior to Mln 'r arrest, but were unable to get anv definite charges on which to arrest th n m.
