THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

ELECTIONS IN JAPAN ;■ . The general elections in Japan hhve resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Government Party, which may bo described as moderately progressive in its domestic policy and carefully restrained in the sphere of foreign , affairs. The Government as now reconstituted is not likely to. favour aggression iii any part of China, whereas the Opposition, including large numbers of wealthy landowners and capitalists, put the development of Manchuria in the forefront of their programme. However, the most impressive result of the election was the complete defeat of Labour and failure of workers’ representatives to secure any large number of votes indicates clearly the strength of conservatism in Japan and the inability of Western Socialist doctrines to make any headway against the weight of Japanese political tradition.
