GENEVA LABOUR CONFERENCE
REPRESENTATION OF GOVERNMENT. PROFESSOR TOCKER MAY BE SELETEI). AVELLINGTON, February 25. There lias been a good deal of surmise in both political and industrial circles as to the representations of the \ Government at the Labour Conference in Geneva. No announcement on the subject has so far been made. The employers are to he represented by the Hon. T. Shader "Weston, and it was ’•eported some, little time ago that Mr fames Roberts would represent the workers. It is now denied, however, that. Mr Roberts has been chosen, union officials here stating quite positively that the reoresentation of Labour will '>e the subject of a ballot. Various names have been mentioned in connection with the third post, and it may bo taken for granted that if he ‘•■an be soared from his duties by the Hoard of Governors of Canterbury College. Professor A. H. Tocker will; be in vited through the Cabinet to be the official nonr'nee. Professor Tocker has all the qualifications for the post. He is thoroughly conversant with Labour conditions in New Zealand, and has made a close study of the industrial conditions in New Zealand, and has bc.°n the economic expert associated wit lithe Economics Committee .of the Cantorhir-v Chamber of Commerce and has been in the main responsible for the remarkable series of bulletins issued by that committee. It is his work in this connection that brings his name to the fore on the present occasion. It is understood that Cabinet, if it has discussed the matter, has as yet made no selection, but it is significant that everyone interested in the subject names Professor Tocker as the man for the job ,nnd no other name has so far been mentioned. LABOUR NOMINATIONS.!:... The selection of a delegate to,;Represent the New Zealand trade uniqhs at the? International Labour Obnfgfegqe at Geneva in June, involves an ■,election, following ' the procedure adopted' for the appointment of an Arbitration Court assessor.
