ENORMOUS POWER

WINNER OF THE SCHNEIDER TROPHY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, February 25. It was revealed to-day. that the horse-power of the Rolls Royce engine in the Superniarine SO' seaplane which won the Schneider Trophy, and also the world’s speed record, last September, is 19.00. Tins power is enormous for so small a machine. When tli engine has been further improved, experts believe that it wilf develop 2500 horse-power at least. ' In the previous Schneider Trophy contest, in 1927, the horse-power development by the British machines was 900. It was an enormous advance to produce an engine with a power capactity more than double that of the engines used in the race two years before.

It is mentioned that the two Italian machines that conipet»d in last year’s race were each fitted with, two 900 horse-power murines. It was thought that they would win with that power, because it was not realised that the combined horse-power of these two engines did not equal that of the single engine in thp British machine.
