MOTOR RESTRICTIONS
CONFERENCE TO SIMPLIFY THEM
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. An opinion that too many restrictions
are placed upon motorists because of excessive zeal on the part of those responsible for framing the regulations was expressed by x the Minister of Transport (Mr Veiteh) to-day when opening a conference of representatives of the various motor unions called by him to consider the revising of the existing regulations. Taking a purely common-sense and practical view of the situation, the Minister said, experience had taught that there had been a great deal of overlapping, and, consequently, unnecessary interference with
the movement of motor vehicles throughout New Zealand. They had no central system, and .sections of people in various localities had different kinds of regulations and restrictions, not always with the same object. There were a number of limitations and regulations affecting motor transport with which it was not possible to comply. Regulations should not he framed to irritate people, hut should he applied as little as possible, and only so far as was necessary to protect the liberty and lives of others. He was sure that all would take a broad national view of the matters submitted to them during the conference. They had undertaken a difficult task, but he believed they would meet with success. Toe Minister then withdrew and the control of the conference was handed over to the Commissioner of Transport (Mr Ji. S. Hunter). The delegates discussed in committee various matters on the agenda paper, ft is expected that the conference will occupy some days.
