CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
PRISON GOVERNOR’S VIEWS
[United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph .—Copyright. ]
(Received this day at noon.) LONDON, Feb. 25
The death penalty is the only thing which prevents London becoming another Chicago, with revolver battles up. and down the streets, was the opinion of Colonel Hales, Governor of Parkhurst, Prison, expressed to the Capital -Punishment Committee.- Furthermore the abolition would mean it would be necessary to arm the police which is at present the only .force in Europe unarmed. It would also he necessary to arm warders. The gallows, are only a just restribution foi cold-blooded murder. Association with convicts has taught me that professional burglars and motor car thieves would not hesitate to murder to evade arrest.
