CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday. Present; Alessrs R. Wild (chairman), W. A. Banks, J. W. Preen, G. \V. Armitage, G. S. Thompson, J. G. Gow, E. H. Andrews W. Johnson, T. Hughes, W. P. Spencer and H. J. Bignell. Appointments made included: Co Wen, Air A. L. Edward. Goldsborougli, Miss U. G. Alusgro-ve. Greymouth, AJiss F. M. Henderson. Hokitika, Air C. G. Warren, assistant master.

The appointments Committee reported that the acceptance of a tender for conveyance to Harihari was deferred, pending receipt of information. Leave of absence was approved:— Hokitika, Aliss Bell. Kumara, Aliss C. Pamment. Woodstock, Mr H. Ellery.

It was resolved to send special letters of thanks and appreciation to Air E. Partridge, of Hokitika, who has been promoted to the inspectorate after highly satisfactory service as a teacher in Canterbury, and to Air J. Alethven, Timaru South, who is, retiring alter long and efficient service.

“I am, satisfied that some measure of benefit will result from the i visit to Canterbury of the Minister for Education,” Air R. Wild, Chairman, stated. Air C. S. '.Thompson said; “We should be grateful to the A 1 mister for the interest lie takes in our schools. He inquires into every detail, and he .seems to have a thorough grip on educational questions.” BUILD INGS centoIITTEIK.

Docherty’s Creek.—A report was received from the Greymouth Foreman regarding the Committee’s suggestion that the Board manufacture sections .of a portable building. (The Committee has offereu to accept liability for freight charges and cost of erection). It was resolved to apply to. the Department for a grant to cover the cost of the work outlined by the Foreman. Eva'n’s Creek—The Committee wrote asking the Board to request the adjoining owner (Mr G. Perry) to remove his fence on the northern boundary parallel with the creek to enable the children to have the use of the level piece of ground as a playing field. Oil the recommendation of tieGreymouth Foreman it was resolved to approach Mr Perry and to request him to be good enough to allow the fence to be shifted to the position suggested by the School Committee. Greymouth.—The Committee wrote jVcoiding its extreme satisfaction with the remodelling . work carried out at the Biaketown School. It was decided that a copy of the Committee’s letter be forwarded to the Greymouth Foreman.

Greymouth—Correspondence was received from the Department stating that it was loth to erect additions .;t the Primary iSchool unless the Government decided to abandon the proposed re-organisation, scheme and (a; asking if the Board had any ejection to the provisi -n of additional lassroom accommodation at the Technical School, to which Standards V and VI from the Primary School could be transferred. (b) The Committee wrote protesting against the Department’s proposal to transfer Standards V and VI pupils to the Technical School and requesting the Board to erect the additional accommodation at the Primary School. It was resolved to send a copy of the Committee’s letter to the Department and to ask that a grant be approved for the erection of the additional rooms required at the Primary School if the reorganisation scheme is not carried into effect within a reasonable time.

It was resolved to adopt the report of Mr H. J. Bignell recommending tire Board to agree to the .Greymouth 'Borough Council’s proposals to exchange that portion of the Native Reserve at. present used as a Children’s Park for' land of equal unimproved value, of the Town Belt enclosed in the school grounds; the . arrangement to be subject to the Council undertaking that it.will not erect any building or buildings on the land now used as a school garden, which will, if the exchange eventuates, lie between the school and the Children’s Park.

Pukekura.—On the recommendation of Mr H. J. Bignell it was resolved to take steps for the removal of the Pukekura School to a site 3J miles north, midway between Pukekura and Kakapotahi. Mr Bignell was deputed to get into touch with the Lands Department with a Gev of securing a suitable site. Ruru.—The Senior Inspector wrote intimating that as the teacher may be promoted at any time and in all probability be succeeded by an unmarried teacher, it would be unwise at the present time to go to the expense of erecting a school residence. Tt was resolved tha the Committee be advised of the position. Matainui and Wataroa Reserves. — A report was presented by Mr H. 4 ■ Bignell and on his recommendation it was resolved to arrange for the the sale of two reserves in the Wataroa Survey District and Reserve No. 302 situated on the old Christchurch Road, between Kurnara and Golsborough.
