SOLICITOR’S DEATH*

WANGANUT. Feb. 20,
Obituary.—James Watt, barrister and solicitor, aged 71. He was formerly prominent in volunteering, rowing and cricket circles. He was President of the local Cricket Association for some years.
BOWLING ON SUNDAY
CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 20
Bowling history will be made in Christchurch on. Sunday next when ten rinks from Timaru clubs will meet players from most of the local clubs on this Canterbury Club green. This will be the first bowling match to bo played on a Christchurch green on a Sunday.
PROMINENT MAN’S DEATH
VALUABLE WAR SERVICE,
Auckland, Feb. 20,
Neville Newcombo died last night, aged 64. Ho rendered valuable service during tlio war. From the command of the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps at Avondale he was transferred as Adjutant to the training camp at Tauherenikau and was subsequently transferred to Feathorston camp as Adjutant. He was promoted to Major in 1917 for services. The 0.8. E. was conferred on him by the King at Buckingham. Palace.
A PENDING RETIREMENT
WELLINGTON, February 20
“I have just arranged for my commission to expire o.n March 31st on which, date 1 will haul down my flag,” announced W. A. Kennedy to a reporter this morning. Kennedy is the senior member of the U.S.S. Coy. having joined in January 1877 and has completed 53 years service. Since 1895 he has been manager of the Wellington branch.
A LIVELY MEETING
CHRISTCHURCH, February 20
A lively meeting of the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union last night saw the placings in the Australasian ten mile Championship held on February 5 reversed. The placings were: P. O’Shea 1 ; W. T. Weir 2 ; L. W. Hill 3. The placings have been altered to Weir 1; O’Sliea 2: S. A. Jordan 3.
It is alleged Hill rode to protect O’Shea riding -Jordan off and that O’Shea, swung out just before ( the finish preventing Weir from passing him and winning.

SHOP LIFTER GAOLED
AUCKLAND, February 20
At the Police Court Mary Haslip, 41 was sentenced by Mr Hunt S.M. to twenty one days imprisonment for shop lifting, on three charges of stealing front a city drapery store eight frocks valued at £62, Chief.. Detective Samond said that accused who, had pleaded guilty, was living apart from her husband but being maintained by him. Accused and her daughter were seen in the street by the shop assistant who identified the stolen frocks worn by them. Accused was dressed to kill. Other stolen goods were found in accused’s residence.
INQUEST.
AUCKLAND, Feb. 20.
William Potter found with his throat cut in Foch Avenue. Dominion Road, died at the hospital this morning.
An inquest on Agnes Beesley, tile first victim of the tragedy was opened to-day by Mr Hunt, S.M.
John Frederick Beesley stated in evidence that deceased was his wife. Ho last saw her alive when he left home for work at 8.30 a.m. yesterday, their three children having already left for school. William Potter was in the house when witness left for work. Potter had been a friend of witness for twenty years and had boarded with them about three years. Witness returned home at G.lo p.m. Tuid found the house locked un. He entered by a window and found his wife lying dead'in the dining room and Potter with his throat cut Ho sent for the police and a doctor. The inquest was adjourned at this stage.
