Tlie movement df protest against the Soviet religions persecution, has rained momentum (with the appeal made to President Hoover by various groups, also by the “Call to Prayer by the Lutheran World Convention, And a further appeal by the American Jewish Congress. . appeals have disclaimed any desire to interfere .in Russia’s internal affairs, but' have declared* that silence is no longer ' . possible in 7 the face’ of. the ' Soviet’s .suppression of primary human rights. Meanwhile the Soviet'/ followers in the New York area hW announced nlans to.hold a great mass meeting at ( the same , time as the protest gathering proposed by Bishop Manning, as cabled on February -16th. . ' The Communists have issued a lengthy statement denying the truth of the, persecution reports, which they declared to be propaganda inspired by a fear , on' the part of the capitalistic world of Soviet progressiveness. The principal speaker of the Soviet .meeting here will be a former Episcopal Bishop, Brown, of Arkansas. •. KOUTEROEF mystery.

' Thus Koutepoff’s kidnapping was thrillingly re-enacted to-day in the presence iff the Gerienils weeping wife, also a score of detectives, a ’•ast crowd of delighted onlookers and a dozen movie operators. The crime was reconstructed within forty seconds with the help of Auguste 'Steinmetz, an eye-witness of the kidnapping, ’ who directed every movement of the actors. There are 150 detectives, stil lworking for a solution of, the mystery.
IMPERIAL CONFERENCE
WELLINGTON, February 19,
The Premier announced to-day the receipt of an intimation from the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom that the meeting Of the Imperial Conference will open at London on September 30. The matter of representation of New Zealand will receive consideration at an early date, and. a further announcement will be made in due. course.
