CHINESE AFFAIRS

AN ULTIMATUM

Press Association —I3y Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.]

(lUc«iv*d this day at 11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Feb. 18

Yerlksishan’s ultimatum to Nanking, demanding Chiangkaishek’s retirement and forecasting an outbreak of hostilities in the near future has not produced the excitement anticipated in Governinent circles. Chiangkaishek is taking a determined stand and refuses to abdicate while the country remains in a state of military unrest. This at titude is supported apparently by members of the Government and army chiefs have been instructed to assemble at Nanking, allegedly to discuss tin suppression of bandits, but the real ob ject is believed to be the planning of a spring campaign.
