WESTLAND BRANCH.
The monthly meeting of the. Westland branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last evening. There were present:—Messrs D. P. Stuart (President), Dr Teichelmaim, R. Appieton, 11.l 1 . W. Duff, F. Andrews, Jas. King, J. Schroder, W. E. Ricnards (non. Sec.) An apology was received for the absence of Mr J. J. Mclntosh, senr.
Correspondence, dealing with the camping ground on the Hokitika : racecourse was read, and in this re-'jf\ spect it was resolved that the parent f body in Chrstchurch be asked to make it known to members of camping out parties that all inlormation re the camp can be obtained from the local secretary. It was also resolved to have erected on the main road a noli: ice board Directing where to find the Camping ground. Re Mr Freeman’s reply in the New Zealand Mptor Owner of February, re tile Lewis Pass route, Dr Teiehelmann . moved that this branch would like to point out that it does not in any way oppose the Lewis Saddle, route but it considers the present Otira route, which has been iff use for the last sixty years has a prior claim, and tips branch considers it should have the j-j full support of the parent body in urging the Main Highways Board to keep it in good order and also sup* port the completion of the Otira road by a deviation and bridging the Waimakariri. Seconded by Mr King and carried. .unanimously. On the motion of Mr Duff, seconded by Mr Appieton it was resolved that this branch appoint a deputation to meet the Highways Board on their arrival in Hokitika and bring before their notice matters concern- • ihg the motor public, and it was resolved to ask the Greymouth branch, to co-operate. The growth at several corners was mentioned and the danger of the narrow cutting 'leading to the Shenandoah creek bridge at Kanieri was also brought forward, arid the Secretary was instructed to write to the Resident Engineer on the matter.
A letter was received, from Mr Johnston, Resident Engineer, stating that lie has instructed the overseer to have the ford over Dooherty’g Creek in South Westland improved, as much as possible, also ■ stating .that a? the bridge over, the cireek was nearing completion there would be very few hold-ups at this in future. The members expressed satisfaction at the courtesy always received at the hands of Mr Johnston.
Two now members, Messrs F. Chesterman and F. Heveldt, were elected.
