DENNISTON MINE IDLE.

WESTPORT, Feb. 18.

The Denniston mine was idle yesterday and to-dav owing to a dispute over the employment of a fireman. It is reported the fireman overstayed his leave and when he returned was refused his old position. The matter was reported to the union who stopped work at the mine. The mine is now idle pending a settlement.

MEDICAL CONFERENCE

The' annual conference of ' the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association began this morning, I>r. T. Mill presiding. At a reception this evening Hon. Stallworthy will give an address.

FRAUD CHARGE, GISBORNE, February 18

Alfred Edward Gurney, at present serving terms of imprisonment for offences committed at Gisborne and Napier, was before the Court to-day on two further charges of unlawful conversion and obtaining credit by fraud at Marton. Accused pleaded guilty, and was remanded for sentence.

PTOMAINE POISONING. HASTINGS. February 18,

A serios case of ptomaine poisoning was traced to a mid-day meal on Sunday. It occurred at a boarding-house on Sunday, six women being affected, four being sent to a hospital. They are progressing favourably. A test of the food partaken is being made by the health Inspector.

UNITED PARTY. WELLINGTON, Feb. 17

As a result of inquiries a “Post” representative was informed that the meeting of the United Party on Friday has no political significance such as has been given to it. The business is purely of a domestic nature, concerning me organisation and it is at present doubtful if the Prime Minister will be present. There will be a meeting of Cabinet on Friday morning.

A CORRECTION. DUNEDIN, Peb. 18.

Tapley and Coy., agents for the Byrd Expedition state that Raymond Mercola whose views on the movements of the Antarctic Expedition ’were telegraphed yesterday, was never a supply officer to the expedition, but was taken aboard the Eleanor Bolling on one trip as mess hoy. He has, they aver, no authority to state the present or future movements of the Expedition, and the information published is entirely incorrect.
