It was announced to-dav that the new Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, will arrive in New Zealand by the ivangitiki, which is due at Wellington on March 19th. next.

ENGLISH FIRM EXTENDS OPERATIONS.

With the intention of touring the

whole of New Zealand, Mr Montague Cohen, a director of one of the largest tobacco companies in -Great Britain, arrived in Auckland by the Niagara this morning. “My firm have decided to manufacture their various brands of cigarettes in Australia,” lie said. “.For that purpose a £500,000 company lias been formed. The factory will be situated in Melbourne and I shall be in charge of the Australian business.”

Mr Cohen expressed the opinion that would be absolutely necessary for Engish companies to erect factories in Australia and New Zealand. Whilst in the Dominion ,he said, he would investigate the position thoroughly,

POTATO GROWING EXPERIMENT

DUNEDIN, Feb. 10.

Mr Alick Sutherland, an old resident of Puketeraki, lias just concluded -asuccessful experiment in a new method of potato growing. Air Sutherland > marked'off a small area of ground, and did not dig it up. He simply laid seed' potatoes on the ground and covered them with grass clipped from lawns, etc. The potatoes grew in a wonderful manner, and Air Sutherland was able to collect a fine sample, as was demonstrated by a small lot which he displaved this afternoon.

BANKRUPT ESTATE

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 14

The adjourned meeting of creditors, n the bankrupt estate of Leslie James Roathe and George Edward Stokes, merchants' of Christchurch, resolutioned: “That the papers be put into the hands of the Crown Solicitor, with a view to taking criminal proceedings. The official assignee said the debts totalled over £4OOO and the prospects of , a dividend were poor. • The books were kept carelessly. '

News was received that a man named Arthur Nightingale, of Hikurangi, employed at the Avoca coal mine, 13 miles out, was killed, presumably being .struck . fclje-jbaefeof, the -.head with the handle of a winch used in connection ivith loading lorries at the pit head. The eighteenth annual show of the Buller and Westport A. and P. Association -opened to-day. Mr Carey Birchfield is the winner of the cattle cup, and Mr Burley, of Buller Gorge, of the horse cup. FIRES AT ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, February 15. A fire at 8.45 o’clock this morning gutted a vulcanising shop owned by F. -Ferriman, and occupied by Roy Moore, the stock being destroyed. The adjoining shop also owned by ‘Mr Ferriman and occupied by Sutton and Lilmdenning was slightly damaged. The buildings are insured for £6OO in the North British. Moore’s stock is insured for about £2OO. A Reo speed track owned by R. G. Thompson, of Hinds, was destroyed by fire at Fairton yesterday afternoon. The truck was loaded with 18 45-gal drums of petrol. Only three were left intact. The fire spread to P. Lysaght’s fences, two chains being burned and a house endangered. ■ A fire at Motu destroyed a seventeen rocV'pd house, formerly a- boarding house, owned by the G. R. Mediums! estate and occupied by Mrs Lovell. The insurance was £3OO on the building and £4OO on the furniture and effects. found dead. INVERCARGILL, Feb'. 14. John Beer, aged 70, a single man, who lived at Te Anau, was found dead in the but this afternoon. In view of the fact that he had been in ill-health for some time, an inquest may not be necessary.
