MINISTERIAL STATEMENT

Asked whether it was proposed to scrap four ships of the Hawking classes a.s part of the naval reductions, the First Lord of the Admiralty, Hon Alexander, said in the Commons tnat he could not speak at this stage of the negotiations between the Five Powers, nor make any forecast of what possible reduction might result from them.
Replying to another question, Hon. Alexander said the number of fifty cruisers considered needful for tlie British Empire had been arrived'at after a full investigation, and it was considered to meet all requirements for tlie period of the agreement, which it was hoped would he reached a.s a result of the Naval Conference. Tlie number was subject to the satisfactory outcome of that Conference.
